Are we really happy? Do we really know what happiness means? When I search for “Being Happy” on Google, I got 874,000,000 results which means there are already a lot of articles on the internet on being happy. I feel this world will be a better place if everyone in this world is happy. Through this blog post I plan to share my experience and perspective on being happy, so before you jump to conclusions I want to start off with some disclaimers.
First disclaimer: I have a lot of flaws (probably more than a lot of you reading this article) but one thing I can tell you is I feel happy most of the time and a lot of my friends & family will agree to that. That doesn’t make me a happiness guru. The reason for writing this article is so that we can all benefit from knowing how to be HAPPY. After all we are all seeking HAPPINESS, aren’t we?
Second disclaimer: I am not saying happiness is the lack of disappointment, frustrations, despair or sadness but in fact the opposite. The reason we know what happiness means is because there is an abundance of things that make us unhappy.
Third disclaimer: This is not a cookie cutter approach of being happy which means not everything here will apply all the time – there will always be exceptions.
Enough disclaimers, let’s get to the point…
In my opinion, forgiveness is the best medicine to be happy. Most of our unhappiness comes from the fact that someone (including you) said or did something wrong. It is okay, let it go, forgive him/her and most importantly forgive you. I know people who sulk and remember something someone said or did years ago (that too not intentionally) and then wait to take their wrath out at some point of time. If you do wrong to a person because of what they did, then what is the difference between them and you? Do you really think holding a grudge and then lashing out years later is going to make you happy? I doubt it, but in my opinion (based on personal experience) forgiving will definitely make you happy.
True forgiveness is when you can say, thank you for that experience. – Oprah Winfrey
Imagine, if every nation on earth forgive each other right now (just a pipe dream), there would be no war and we would have world peace overnight 🙂
Most of the times, we try to look for happiness outside ourselves when it is within us. I have heard people say drinking alcohol makes them happy. That’s fair and that’s individual choice. I don’t drink and that’s my choice because in my opinion, all these are temporary pleasures that probably make you feel good (I disagree) but definitely not HAPPY. Don’t get me wrong, we definitely need some pleasures in our life but we can’t keep on jumping from pleasure to pleasure assuming we are HAPPY. In my opinion, the real issue with the world today is the constant struggle to differentiate between pleasure and happiness. An easy way to differentiate is that the thought of a pleasurable activity makes you feel good instantly but not quite like that with happiness. Happiness requires some tough choices and work but yield long lasting results. This means, the more “happy” choices we make the happier we will be, simple! For example, it is easy to grab a beer, sit on the couch, eat pizza, watch TV than do something productive like learning something new related to your profession. Nothing wrong with it but it will only get us closer to unhappiness. Second indication that we are indulging in pleasure v/s happiness is, we typically want to justify our actions. For example, when I eat a large pizza I feel good temporarily but later feel like justifying my actions – it’s okay to indulge once in while, after all I am a human being, only one pizza wouldn’t hurt, I have worked hard for it.
Everyday, I constantly struggle with – do I watch television or read a book with my daughter, do I take a quick nap in the evening or go to the gym, do I read a nice book or spend my time on social media, do I eat a pizza/cake or a salad, do I hold a grudge or let it go. I know the more wrong choices I make everyday the further I will be from happiness!
Getting busy doing something you are passionate about to accomplish a goal is a great way to be happy and continue to stay happy. That’s why people who find their purpose in life are happier than people who haven’t yet. I am still in the second category, but striving to get into the first category to find my true purpose. We have all found our short term purpose at least a few times in our lives. Did you recently work on something that you worked harder than you thought you could, but didn’t feel tired after finishing it? Did you compete in a sport and felt awesome after wining even though your body hurt. Did you stay up all night to finish up an assignment or a presentation, so you could get ahead in your career. These are all short term purposes that we have all experienced that made us happy. I remember studying for hours/days at a stretch during the final exam week/month because my purpose was to get good grades for a better future. It wasn’t convenient but made me happy. I have worked hard after hours at my job to forward in my career. Any management/leadership/self help book you pick up will also tell you, find your true purpose and get busy doing it.
“Your purpose in life is to find your purpose and give your whole heart and soul to it” – Buddha
This is an instant happiness booster. I am guilty of not being as grateful as I should be but whenever I am grateful I instantly feel happy. Think about this perspective – With all the things you have going on that make you unhappy, would you trade your life with a person who doesn’t have an arm? How about trading your life with someone who is a millionaire but on a wheelchair for last 10 years? Would you trade life with a person who is better looking than you but suffering from an incurable disease? Probably not, which means that there are millions of people in the world who are living in absolute misery and would love to trade life with you. If you take the time, you can easily come up with at least 100 things to be grateful about right now. Look yourself in the mirror, do you have all body parts in decent condition then be grateful. Most of you reading this article have shelter, decent clothes, good food, job/business, caring family, decent car, safety, good friends, peace of mind, sound health, money, correct? Then be grateful.
Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” Oprah Winfrey
Complaining is just the opposite of being grateful and only attracts more things to complain about. In my opinion, there is absolutely no benefit in complaining other than gaining sympathy from other people. I have heard people say, the government is bad, the TV show is horrible, the food doesn’t taste good, the weather is terrible, my car is so old etc. If you don’t like where you are right now, try living in one of the slums in a third world country for an hour and you will stop complaining for the rest of your life! I have made a rule for myself, I will not complain! Period. Try it out for 24 hours you will feel better.
Never tell your problems to anyone…20% don’t care and the other 80% are glad you have them.” ― Lou Holtz
A lot of times, the reason we are unhappy is because we are too busy trying to impress other people. Haven’t you heard people say – What will “they” say? My question to you is who are “they”? Can you to make a list of all “they” in your life. I bet you will only come up with at most two names who probably criticized you or laughed at you in the past. You are probably giving them more importance in your life than they deserve. In fact, most of the times “they” have enough going on in their lives that “they” don’t have time to think about you. It’s okay if you are not dressed the best once in a while, it’s okay to ask a question and sound dumb in a meeting, it’s okay if you don’t have a luxury car or own a home yet or you recently lost your job. Who are you trying to impress? I hope it’s only YOU! Because, you can’t possibly please everybody, can you?
Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.- Dr. Seuss
Knowing what makes you unhappy is equally important. Many a times our mind is so used to thinking in a certain way that we continue to do the things that make us unhappy and don’t even realize it. For example, we constantly compare our situation with a person who has been blessed in a certain area of life. Haven’t you heard people say – she has a much better home, this guy has a better job, she is more intelligent than me or I wish I was as good looking as him. If you happen to compare yourself with someone compare every area of life not just the one you are lacking. You will soon realize that you are richly blessed in other areas of life that the other person is not.
When I was a kid, I wasn’t the tallest one in the block (I am still not) and would constantly compare myself to other tall kids. I thought the taller you are the better you are and that would really make me feel miserable inside. At one point, I realized that I was blessed in a lot of other areas of my life and stopped comparing myself to others. Not only did it make me feel good inside, it also took any jealousy or ill feeling out of me.
There are a lot of other trivial things that make me unhappy. Have I completely mastered them yet? Absolutely not, but at least I know what makes me unhappy, so it is easy to avoid it as much as possible 🙂
I can’t stress enough on this. I know some really unhappy people in my life that after talking to them they make you believe that this world is the most unhappy place. I don’t want to judge them if they are going through a negative phase but some people are just purely unhappy and ungrateful inside even when they have nothing wrong going on in their lives. I choose to hang out most of the times around positive, happy people and that is a choice you will have to make as well. I am not asking you to break ties with all your friends and family who are unhappy in nature but you can certainly limit the time you spend with them whenever you can. This is sensitive topic and probably you may not agree completely with me, but it’s a fact. Hang around unhappy people and you will be unhappy, hang out with happy people and you will be happy.
I will be honest, I haven’t implemented it as much as I should in my daily life. But I do know that whenever I put a smile on someone’s face, it makes me happy. One cold winter night, I bought a coffee for a police officer and that made him so happy that it automatically made me happy. My last blog post helped someone who was going through a rough patch be motivated and happy which in turn made me happy. Giving to charity without expecting anything in return makes me happy. My goal is one good dead a day, be it as simple as holding the door for someone behind me, saying thank you as much as I can, letting someone ahead of me in a long queue, giving away my seat to someone or just giving some money away to someone in need.
IN CLOSING:
I believe a 100% in my heart that happiness is an inside job. I would recommend stop looking outside and start working on yourself. The only person who can give you long term happiness is YOU 🙂
Hope you find the HAPPY YOU 🙂

Last thanks giving, while I was on my vacation, I heard the shocking news of my colleague and a good friend (about 10 years older than me) suffer a heart attack which resulted in a bypass surgery. This was an eye opener for me and I knew I had to start making some lifestyle changes right away in order to live a healthier and happier life in the future. After all HEALTH IS WEALTH!
On Dec 3rd, 2015, I made the decision to shed 10 pounds in 3 months. This morning, when I stepped on the weighing scale I was thrilled to see that I am 11 pounds lighter and that feels great both physically and mentally. Obviously, this is just the beginning. My goal is to shed 10 more pounds in the next 3 months and then maintain that weight moving forward.
I believe that the greatest gift you can give your family and the world is a healthy you. – Joyce Meyer
For the past few years, I have been reading a lot about success principles and I have come to the conclusion that success principles remain the same to accomplish any significant goal in life – be it loosing weight, being successful in your job/business or even as simple as being a better human being.
I hope this blog post helps you accomplish your goals.
In my opinion, knowing why, what and when you want to accomplish a goal takes you at least 50% closer to it. With that said, this should be your personal deep desire because external motivation can only help you go so far.
The starting point of all achievement is desire – Napoleon Hill
How do you plan to accomplish what you want ?
My plan was to use two new techniques they recently developed – DIET AND EXERCISE 🙂
My plan was to workout 3 days a week for at least half an hour, walk a minimum of 20 mins a day, eat as healthy as I can & drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.
SMART (specific, measurable, assignable, realistic, time bound) goals always yield SMART results. Set up your plan that is easy to follow and doesn’t imbalance other areas of your life. For example, I cannot have a goal of working out 3 hours a day, 5 days a week with my family, job and other commitments.
If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail
– Benjamin Franklin
In my opinion, there is no such thing as overnight success but every night success. With that said, it always helps if you get initial success to boost your confidence and to motivate you to do a little more everyday. If I hadn’t lost any weight the first couple of weeks, my mind would have probably given up like it has in my past few attempts to loose weight. This means the first couple weeks are most important (and most challenging) till you train your brain to stay on the success habits to attract more success.
Doing the right thing, when you don’t feel like it makes all the difference. I think, this is where the rubber meets the road. Going to the gym on a cold winter night is certainly not the easiest thing to do but do it anyway. Eating healthy though you don’t feel like it, is not very exciting but do it anyway. Initially, your mind will find creative ways to avoid you from doing the right thing, do it anyway!!!
All of us have the tendency to give in to distractions (especially when things don’t go our way) because they are so easy and make you feel so good (temporarily). I have had days where it was so easy to just eat a couple of slices of delicious pizza or cheesecake instead of a boring salad (it’s just grass for raising humans). In my opinion, the easiest way to avoid distraction is to know them and stay miles away from it. For example, if your plan is to stop eating sugary foods and drinks then those items probably shouldn’t be on your grocery shopping list :).
Once you decide to do right, life is easy, there are no distractions.― William Stafford
Though external motivation may take you only so far, small rewards along the way will take you a long way. I plan to reward myself with a nice massage now that I am half way towards my goal. Rewards are extremely important to train your mind to believe that doing the right thing will pay off with an attractive incentive. If you are working a job you already know that rewards and incentives brings out the best in each one of us.
I feel a lot of times, we are our own worst enemy. I don’t remember a lot many people who told me that I can’t accomplish a certain goal. But I have probably told myself a hundred times over and over why it’s hard to accomplish a goal and why it wouldn’t work for me. Don’t doubt yourself and get out of your own way. This is probably easier said than done, but the way I imagine it is driving a car and checking the tires, brakes and engine every couple of miles to make sure everything is fine. We don’t do it in real life but do it so often with our goals, our thoughts and our actions.
You cannot change/fix what you can’t measure. Imagine your GPS only knows the end destination but cannot figure out your current location. It wouldn’t take you too far, would it? The GPS needs to constantly monitor your activity in order to guide you to your destination. Similarly, we need to monitor the activity for our goal daily in order to stay on track. We do that all the time in a professional environment at our jobs but rarely in our personal lives. I currently have an app on my phone which monitors the calories consumed, daily nutrition information, steps I walked everyday and a graph of my weight every week. This helps me stay on track daily and be more accountable to my goal.
Gaining more knowledge is the best way to get more passionate about your goal. The more I read about healthy eating habits, right way to exercise and simple weight loss tips, the more passionate I got about my goal. There is a wealth of knowledge on the internet which we can all use to our advantage.
The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing ― Socrates
FINALLY:
We all have the same struggles and the same solutions to these struggles to reach our goals. Hope this post resonates with some of you who are trying to accomplish a goal and losing the focus, the will or the determination to keep going till the end.
If you have more tips or success stories you would like to share please comment on the post. If this post helps you in some way do share it with your family and friends.
Have a healthy and successful day ahead!!!
Today I did a presentation to explain the SOLID Design Principles for software development. SOLID principles have been around for a couple of decades but more than often they are not applied in our daily development either because of a rush to get things done without using best practices, lack of knowledge, not understanding the importance of it or all of the above.
“It is not the beauty of a building you should look at; its the construction of the foundation that will stand the test of time.”
– David Allan Coe
My goal of this presentation was to keep it simple so even a junior level developer understands the concepts and importance of building applications using SOLID principles. You don’t need to be a software architect to understand and apply these principle in your coding life. There are a lot of articles on the internet which explain SOLID principles (or at least attempt to) along with sample code but a lot of them only make it that much more confusing.
I hope these notes & sample code will help you understand these principles without investing hours of your time trying to grasp these simple but extremely powerful concepts in software development.
Let’s begin with the end in mind. To build any stable, extensible and maintainable software application our main goal is to have low coupling (degree of interdependence between software modules) and high cohesion (degree to which the elements of a module belong together). Let’s see if SOLID can come to the rescue.

Let’s get into each principle one by one.
Formal Definition: A class should have one and only one reason to change (single responsibility).
Simple Definition: Do not burden one class with too many responsibilities.
Advantages: Increase cohesion, low coupling, reduced complexity
Formal Definition: Entities (classes, functions etc.) should be open for extension but closed for modifications
Simple Definition: You should be able to extend a class’s behavior, without modifying it.
My definition: Ideally, once a class is done, it’s done.
Advantages: Increased cohesion, extensible code, less chance of introducing bugs in the existing application.
Formal Definition: Objects in a program should be replaceable with instances of their sub-types without altering the correctness of that program.
Simple Definition: Objects of the derived class must behave in a manner consistent with the promises made in the base class’ contract.
My definition: All derived classes should be exact sub-types of the base classNOT kind of sub-types.
Advantages: Code re-usability, reduced coupling and less chance of introducing bugs in the existing application.
Formal Definition: Many client-specific interfaces are better than one general purpose interface.
Simple Definition: Clients should not be forced to implement interfaces they do not use.
My definition: Break down a large class into smaller manageable interfaces
Advantages: Increased cohesion, more extensible and robust.
Formal Definition: Entities must depend on abstractions not on concretions.”
Simple Definition: High level module must not depend on the low level module, but they should depend on abstractions.
My definition: Anytime I new up a class it’s time to look at DIP
Advantages: Loose coupling.
SOLID principles are not rules but just guidelines. These guidelines will help us build more robust, extensible, testable and maintainable applications. If you understand the concepts you will also find out it takes care of:
More information about these principles here:
Though SOLID can help you solve most of the code smells and issues we face in any large applications it should be used with common sense and individual client’s needs in mind. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should 🙂
Hope this helps a lot of folks. Happy coding!!!

A couple of weeks ago, I got my Sitecore 8 Developer Certification.
Here is my experience:
My company sent me to a 4 day Sitecore developer certification program in New York from January 5th – January 8th 2016.
PREPARATION:
Once you (or your company) sign up for the course you get an email from the Sitecore training manager on your setup steps. You need to install the basic core and training core sites as well as configure Sitecore Rocks on Visual Studio. The instructions are pretty detailed so make sure you don’t skip any steps. You will need to have your laptop configured before the first day of your course. They will also provide you a 30 day temporary license key. If you work for a company who already have some Sitecore projects get as much familiarity with the product as you can. This will help you understand the concepts explained in the class really well.
THINGS TO CARRY:
PREREQUISITES:
Here are some prerequisites for the course:
A DAY BEFORE:
I flew down from Boston a day early, around noon to avoid rush hour traffic in Boston as well as in New York. I would recommend getting there a day early so you get a good night’s sleep and are fresh for the first day of class. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express on Water St in NY. It is a 5 min walk to the training center from the hotel. The rooms are extremely small but that’s what you would expect in the city of New York.
FIRST DAY OF TRAINING:
The first day of training started exactly at 9 am. I grabbed a quick breakfast at my hotel and reached the training center at 8:45 am. The trainer/instructor was Roby (last name Robicheuax). There were a total of about 8 people in the class. We were asked to introduce ourselves and state one interesting fact about ourselves. Make sure you are prepared because it is difficult to come up with one at the last minute 🙂
There are some snacks, water, juices and coffee served at the training center. They do not serve lunch. The first of training is the most basic but the most overwhelming for the people who are new to Sitecore. They walk you through a lot of concepts which I now feel are very simple but felt a bit overwhelmed the first day. There will be very minimal coding on the first day of training and will be only focused on Basic Sitecore site.
SECOND/THIRD DAY OF TRAINING:
The second and third days are pretty intense and will require you to drink a little coffee to make sure you are awake and attentive. You will be using the Sitecore APIs to build small functionalities. This is really interesting especially if you are a hard core developer. The trainer walks you through a lot of concepts and make sure you are not shy to ask questions. A lot of the concepts covered here will appear in the exam so make sure you pay attention and take mental notes. Give yourself sometime to prepare for the exam in the evening. This will boost your confidence because there is only so much you can remember in one shot. The more you revise the better prepared you will be for the exam.
LAST DAY OF TRAINING AND EXAM:
The last day focuses on the remaining topics like the marketing and permission model , workflows and many more. I felt the last day almost goes in a flash. I also felt the instructor just rushes through these topics and you are not in a mindset since you are already thinking about the much dreaded exam coming up later that day.
THE EXAM:
The exam is an hour long multiple choice test. You have 40 questions and need to get at least 28 (70%) correct to pass the test. Some of the questions are really simple but some are tricky and all 3 options are very similar. The key is that you understand the concepts really well. If you have been attentive in class it shouldn’t be difficult to pass the test. You will know the results within a couple of hours.
You should be done no later than 4 pm on Friday, so if you have a flight back don’t book it too late. I was able to reach the airport in 45 minutes but was flight was at 9 pm. Luckily, the 6:30 pm flight was under booked and they could get me into that flight.
Good luck and hope this helps!
